Those who profess the philosophy “take life one day at a time” obviously do not remember their first day at a new job. It is a looming, ominous day that is not to be savored. It is even more difficult for interns because it is a completely new environment inhabited by business people and copy machines.
But why do we interns rip ourselves from the beach to toil inside at a desk? Experience. It is our introduction to the real world and we want to be the belle of the ball.
We come for the experience and stay for the people. It is the little things that really let us relax and take a breath on the first day. It is the affable receptionist who posts a welcome sign and the supervisor who stops by to ask about the first day, and not to supervise. And if the previous intern left her notes about who to contact about what, we send up a little prayer. Thanks Jessica.
