Intern, Blogged

When I learned I would be keeping blog, I did what every good college student does. I Googled. A search with the key words “intern and blog” reveals a CBS News blog titled “Summer Intern + Blog = Unemployment?” It starts out scary. Melissa McNamara cites a New York Times article about a Comedy Central intern who was severely scolded for blogging about internal business workings. My heart was in my throat until halfway through the entry when she quotes an ABC network intern blog:
"My thought is that media organizations, especially those that target a younger audience, should encourage interns to blog and post those blogs on the organizations [sic] site," Matt Sokoloff writes. “Oversight might be needed on some blogs, but for the most part it could provide for a very entertaining and real look at what it is like to work behind the scenes at that organization.”
Yay for HRB! While my blog probably won’t be classified as “very entertaining,” it does show that smaller companies have bigger insights than giants like Comedy Central or the New York Times, who recommends that interns shouldn’t blog. I think nothing looks more dubious than news coverage about the organization’s paranoid, Big Brother-like activities.
