It took very little time for HRB’s Cedar Rapids employees to transform themselves into a virtual agency. After we learned that there would be water in downtown (we didn’t know how much) and MidAmerican would shut off the power, we frantically prepared ourselves to work at home.
In the days up to the crest I worked just like normal, just with one eye on my email account and the other on the TV news. The only difference was a twinge of uncertainty about what was happening to the office.
The water filled a story and a half of the building. After the water receded, everything below desktop height, including filing cabinets, was covered in sludge and mold. Like the rest of downtown, the office was inhabitable. Unfortunately the office will not be repaired until after my internship ends.
I am now a “virtual intern.” I work on the same projects, just at home or in the coffee house down the street. It is an interesting experience with different challenges.
